Five arrests in Shiokas murder case in Thomasville

In Thomasville on August 24 reports say five men are jailed in the George Shiokas murder and four more are under surveillance awaiting further developments. Shiokas died after being struck on Barrow Street August 3 and died the next night at City Hospital. A Greek community fund raised five hundred dollars for the slayer's capture. Detectives from Fire Underwriters assist, tied to a fire affidavit to the state fire marshal and an incident at a Boston store.

Exempt Ten Years Proposed for Georgia Factories

Georgia would grant a ten year tax exemption to all new manufacturing industries under one tax reform measure. Rep Herschel H Elders of Tattnall plans to introduce the measure at the extraordinary session to attract manufacturing enterprises and boost state commerce and finances. The proposal is among eight reform plans and requires constitutional amendment.

ROME August 24 The Italian government has sent its ultimatum to Jugoslavia demanding a definite decision on Fiume status. It is alleged Belgrade government is delaying a settlement of the situation.

Train Derailment Near Vina Kills Fifty Many Hurt

More than 50 people were killed and about 100 injured when a Vilna to Warsaw train derailed and collided with a dam, the crash flooding the area as waters surged over the structure. The disaster occurred near Vina on August 24, authorities reported from Moscow.

Owens Executed at Little Rock Today

Owens died in the electric chair at the state penitentiary in Little Rock Arkansas at age 52 for the December murder of druggist Hugh Throckmorton. Witnesses said he met death early and he had recently attempted an escape.

The last continental air flight testing a permanent 28 and 89 hour schedule from New York to San Francisco began this morning with east and west coast departures. The eastbound flyer reached New York four minutes early, and officials say the test proves a reliable schedule can be maintained and will be inaugurated.

Hudsons Bond Put At 10000 By Hicks

Macon August 24 Sheriff Hicks placed the three Hudson brothers under bonds of 10000 each after learning their attorneys seek their release. The Hudsons are held in connection with recent midnight floggings in Macon and Bibb county. Their attorneys announced the intention to secure a bond reduction.

Aug 24 thieves held up night watchmen on the West Coast and blew open two safes belonging to Manu Brown Manufacturing Jewelry Company. One hundred thousand dollars in diamonds and other gems were taken.

Riverside drowning tragedy linked to irrigation flume rescue

In Riverside California Mrs Robert Burton 17 and her sister 12 along with Ronald Hubert 12 drowned while attempting to rescue the 7 month old son. Mrs Burton waded with the baby in her arms as a sudden rush of water swept the child into the lake and Hubert twice entered the water to save the child but all three perished.

Trans-Continental Flight Records Smashed by Smyte

Hempstead August 24 All American continent flight records fell as Pilot Wesley Smith of the air mail service landed at 11 14 completing a relay from San Francisco in 26 hours 14 minutes. Actual flying time was about an hour less because of stops machine and pilot changes.

Savannah August 24 G Burney Wilder and his wife were arrested by federal officers charged with violating the prohibition laws. According to officers they were arrested while they were operating a still together in Camden county.

The board of assessors led by P. B. Williford proposes tax law changes in Americas. They recommend allowing an unapportioned penalty for failure to return property for taxation and fixing its amount by the board. Final valuations await compilation by city clerk Dudley Wood.
