Atlanta Aug 22 The Coffee county contest over election returns is settled. Rev John Vickers Democratic candidate for Coffee in the Georgia lower house loses his claim after the settlement, and Elijah Tanner Populist wins the seat from Coffee. The dispute held Coffee without a representative at the last session and delayed official results.
Braufort North Carolina August 22 Most destructive storm in the section on record. Sixteen fishermen camped on Swan Island near the Neuse river were forced to seek the mainland as the island flooded. Fourteen drowned from capsized boats including four Smith and four Salter brothers and six others. A crew of four on another island is missing and presumed drowned. Occracoke island suffered thirty houses and two atees destroyed, piers washed ashore, several steamers and schooners wrecked, all boats flooded, at least twenty drowned, and livestock lost as the island stayed under water three days.
A Maconite named John Schmidt was arrested in Shreveport Louisiana for bigamy. He allegedly married Mrs Kate Schaeffer on July 9 while his wife and three children remained in Macon Georgia. He faces a $1000 fine and was remanded. Also noted is John R McLean arriving from Washington with others for the Democratic state convention.
