In Mobile Alabama on Montgomery Street, two men were seriously wounded after a deadly street fight. Charles Ray lies in dying condition, and J G Reasonover suffers a shotgun wound to the thigh. Reasonover says Ray threatened his life. Ray fired once before collapsing as police arrived.
London August 19. Earl of Denbigh at a Primrose meeting says a weak front in South Africa risks breaking the empire. William T. Stead in The Review of Reviews accuses Chamberlain of fault in the crisis tied to the Jameson raid and Boer oligarchy. Stead also criticizes Milner for provoking war threats by remaining in the Transvaal.
