Typhoon Hits Hong Kong Harbor Fatal Toll Reported
August 18 Hong Kong officials report a severe typhoon striking Hong Kong harbor. Many ships were driven under and others sought refuge. A British submarine was lost with all hands except one survivor who brought word of the disaster. A British merchant vessel is also listed among the missing.

Early Texas governor orders rangers to quash floggings
