Widow and daughter jump to death in New York

In New York on August 17 Mrs A M Stearns a 60 year old widow and her 35 year old daughter leaped from their sixth floor apartment and died instantly. Police say the two women had been inseparable and police believe a death pact led to the fatal plunge.

Communities Organize For Fair In Four Towns

Four more communities joined the push to strengthen the upcoming Chamber of Commerce fair. In Thalean George O Marshall James A Keri and Everett introduced the plan with Henry Jennings named general chairman and others pledging aid. Thompson named W A Chappell as community chairman and aims for a strong Plains Plains and Andersonville joined with committees led by Mrs J M Lanier Lester Dykes and Alex Slappey to ensure a robust county exhibit for the Sept 25 29 fair. Andersonville formed a three member panel under R C Moran with Mrs J M Lanier at the helm and Plains chose Maj Fort Geo O Marshall and Secretary Everett to lead the local effort. Mayors and bankers attended in Plains with Aldon Carter W L Thomas Dr Thad Wise and other business leaders pledging support.

Large rattlesnakes killed on Ochlocknee River

Thomasville, Aug. 17. Two of the largest rattlers seen here in some time were killed near here recently by L. L. Hinson and members of his fishing party on the Ochlocknee river. Both snakes measured about five and a half feet with fifteen and thirteen rattles plus buttons respectively.

A Bunch of Poor Sports

After 11 a.m. today manager Tom Bell phoned Bainbridge to learn why its baseball team was not in Americus. He was told the Bainbridge team disbanded last night. Americus had planned a double header in Bainbridge yesterday to boost finances, and the Americus management praised for honoring contracts. Bell said Fort Benning or another team would be secured to play today and Saturday.

Construction in Georgia Decreased in July Contracts

In Georgia, building contracts for July totaled 4 237 300 dollars, down 14 percent from June. Residential work dominated at 1 769 200 dollars, public works and utilities at 998 600, and business buildings at 682 500. For the first seven months, statewide contracts stood at 51 301 800 dollars, while Atlanta recorded 2 153 000 dollars for July, up 16 percent from June, with a seven month total of 30 890 700 dollars.

A Turner county party led by county agent B. Rawls visits Sumter to view herds on C. C. Hawkins and Son and W. L. Easterlin farms on Ella ville road. Rural white schools open Sept 17 in Tift County

Tift county’s twenty rural schools for white children will start the fall term on September 17, with the Board of Education hoping cotton will be picked by then. The plan provides about three and a half months of school before Christmas, and is believed to be the earliest opening date for the county’s rural schools. The opening date for colored schools is to be announced later.
