Alienists swear Leopold Loeb sane in Franks murder trial

Chicago August 13 The prosecution called psychiatrists Dr Hugh T Patrick and Dr Archibald Church to testify that Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold were not mentally ill when they murdered Bobby Franks. Dr Patrick said both defendants appeared sane and normal, though perhaps lacking appreciation of the enormity of their act, after confessing to the crime. The court adjourned until Wednesday morning.

Davis Leads Ohio Gubernatorial Primaries in Early Returns

In Columbus, August 13, Harry L. Davis of Cleveland held a two to one lead for the Republican nomination for governor based on 612 of 8,300 precincts. C Homer Durand of Coshocton trailed as liberal candidate backing beer and light wines, with Joseph B. Leiber a Klan candidate third. James A. White of the Ohio Anti-Lynching League was fourth. Governor A W Donahey led the Democratic field by more than three to one over James Beatty.

Terrell Leads In Arkansas Democratic Gubernatorial Primary

A midnight AP tally from 356 of 1,969 precincts shows three of six candidates in a tight race for the Democratic nomination. Tom Terrell of Little Rock led with 5,241 votes, 121 ahead of Lee Cazort of Clarksville who had KKK backing with 5,120. Judge John E. Martineau of Little Rock followed with 4,768.

Americus received its second bale of new cotton on Tuesday afternoon with Glyde C. Griffin and Morgan Brothers receiving honors. Griffin bale weighed 454 pounds, classing middling, and sold to B. B. Ford & Co. of Macon for 85 cents a pound at L. G. Council’s warehouse. Morgan bale weighed similarly but was not sold.

Davis Launches Intensive East Campaign To Nation

John D. Davis Democratic presidential hopeful plans a rapid nationwide drive starting in the East. A Columbus Ohio speech on August 26 will inaugurate his effort with radio used to broadcast speeches to voters nationwide. Davis leaves Clarksburg for New York after thanking local supporters for their warm welcome and support during his visit.

Big crop means low price says council

Americus banker L G Council says a large cotton crop and drought in Texas will set prices. He estimates 13 million bales could yield 22 cents per pound to farmers, 12 million would yield 25 cents, and under that about 30 cents. He cites discussions with New York bankers and cotton factors. In Sumter County he expects 23 000 to 25 000 bales, credits good weather and approved farming methods for a brighter season ahead for farmers in Americus and the region, with Texas drought determining overall output.

County Board Keeps School Books Unchanged in August

The County Board of Education at its August meeting decided to make no changes in books used in county schools unless existing titles become unavailable. Col J E D Shipp, board president, said state adopted books will be substituted if needed. W L Young Stribling of Georgia knocked out Leo Leonard of Wilkes-Barre in the third round of a 12 round bout. The feature fight drew about 10 000 veterans in Charleston with Leonard barely scoring as Stribling dominated. Mayrs defeated Antley in a newspaper decision in the semi final.
