Smugglers Beguiled Immigrants From Havana Carried Nine Trips
Laredo dispatch reports John Gelabert and Jose Fernandez-Valdez, both Americans with birthright claims, organized crossings from Havana to bring groups of immigrants into the United States for fees of 400 to 600 dollars. Each trip yielded six people, with five said to be Russians and one Spaniard. The pair confessed after immigration officials grilled them, claiming threats of death if questioned. City Posse Hunts Black Intruder On Lee Street Road
Armed with high powered rifles, members of the local fire department and many citizens rushed to the Peel residence on Lee street road about 10 pm Monday in hopes of catching a negro seen trying to force an entrance. A bloodhound tracked the intruder to nearby woods but he fled into swamps before police could reach him. Three other negro homes on Lee street road were burglarized last week. some think the suspect is the same man.
