The First Methodist church congregation met in a large audience hall as services mourned a recent fire. Reverend Guyton urged mercy and blessing from God, emphasized rebuilding a bigger, better church, and called the community to unite in faith and work for the reconstruction.
Joe Bell, a negro, was shot and killed early Monday when he attacked Cc T Trice, superintendent of the Ben Easterlin plantation, about six miles north of the city. Trice said Bell grabbed an ax and lunged as he opened the door. the superintendent fired, hitting Bell in the heart. The sheriff's office investigates.
Governor Thomas W. Hardwick of Georgia becomes an honorary member of New York City's Welcome Stranger Committee. L. M. Boomer, chairman, says the committee will foster Georgia New York friendship and ensure a cordial reception for Georgians visiting New York. Governor Hardwick supports the effort as honorary member of the Welcome Stranger Reception committee for distinguished foreign visitors.
Word from Pa Stribling, manager of Young Stribling, Dixie welterweight champ, says a August 28 match with Benny Leonard is planned in Nashville at the new Hippodrome boxing club. Bout listed at catch weights with no decision. Stribling previously defeated Jimmy Conway in Savannah Friday night.
Two men on the J. T. Methvin place clashed Sunday afternoon and one struck the other with a piece of pipe. The injured man was taken to Plains hospital for treatment.
A historical devotional fragment urges a hearty turning to God and the old customs of our fathers. It promises God filling the temple of praise and hearts, declaring that the sacrifice and cost of a new building will be worthwhile when the glory of God inspires the community.
More than 500 singers gathered for a Sunday community sing at the Agricultural auditorium. Visiting quartets from Dawson, Bronwood, Cordeley, Leslie, Plains, Huntington, Smithville and other towns participated under promoter J. T. Bragg. Plans for an all-day sing and September barbecue were announced, with details to follow.
First Baptist Church of Americus marked four years with Dr. Carl W. Minor as minister. Special services featured a musical program by organist Mrs. H. O. Jones and talks from church leaders. Minor reported 250 members added over his pastorate.
The jury commissioners met Monday to revise the jury list but tax receiver books were not ready and adjourned until August 15. Commission members: E. R. Stewart, T. B. Woolridge, J. T. Bolton, T. M. Furlow, A. F. Hodges, and John Sheffield.

Special grand jury returns indictments against Ernest Morse former director of sales at the war department Everly M Davis president of E M Davis Chemical Co New York and Alexander W Phillips linked to Davis charging them with defrauding the government of over one million dollars in connection with the sale of the Old Hickory Powder Company plant in Washington dated August 7.
A resolution by First Methodist missionary societies orders joint meetings of the four groups on every fifth Monday afternoon. Last week the Young People’s Missionary Society led with Miss Marie Bell as chair. The event, held in the church lawn tent, featured prayers, Bible lesson Matt 25, a country-focused quiz, readings, solos, and a social hour led by Mrs. W. M. Riley, Mrs. George Oliver, and Miss Sara Oliver.
The First Methodist church will hold regular services in the Presbyterian church starting Wednesday at 7 45 for prayer meeting. Sunday services remain 11 am and 7 45 pm. Sunday school meets at 9 45 in Americas High School auditorium until the church is rebuilt after the fire.
Cotton picking on a general scale began in various parts of Sumter County Monday, especially in the eastern areas. G C Thomas of Cobb reported crops in his area in good condition though much of the cotton is young. weather in the next ten days will largely influence its outlook. Overall conditions across the county indicate a good crop at present.
A telegram to Mr and Mrs C J Clark announced that Miss Melva Clark visiting Atlanta for several days will sing in the Journal radio program Monday evening. This marks her second radio concert here after an earlier Atlanta program and a radiophone airing at Frank Sheffield Jr’s Taylor street home.
Jacksonville August 7. A soft sand spot at Pablo Beach halted Lieutenant J. S. Doolittle’s plan to hop to San Diego with a single fuel stop at San Antonio. The plane’s wing and propeller were damaged. Doolittle was uninjured. timing of any future attempt is undetermined.
The August 7 dispatch describes a fresh Klondike style gold rush 300 miles north between the Frazer river and Cariboo mountains near Cedar Spanish Lake and Rose Gulch. Prospectors, miners from California and Alaska, and adventurers push by pack train to new shacks. Reports speak of cleanups, strikes near Spanish Lake Keithly Lake Cedar Creek, and occasional violence over claim jumping and shootings amid remote river valleys.
In Birmingham and across Alabama, Democratic primary hopefuls W. W. Brandon of Tuscaloosa and Bob Graves of Montgomery rest after touring the state. Their platforms call for strict prohibition enforcement and state tax reform. Graves backs a soldier bonus and union freedoms, while Brandon promotes nine points including tax abolition on many state workers and reduced payroll.

The board of stewards of the First Methodist church will meet tonight at 8 at the home of S. R. Heys at the junction of Taylor and Lee streets. This is the first meeting since the recent fire and future plans will be discussed. G. Council and John Sheffield may be absent, so preliminary plans will be outlined in their absence.
President Harding urged striking railroad shopmen to return to work and asked railroads to reassign them. He called for submitting disputed questions and seniority to the Railroad Labor Board, while officials in Joliet faced strike riot turmoil with guards deployed and a fatal shooting reported near the yards.
A message from Macon announces the death of Mrs Mary Roxie Lane Edwards at the family country home Holly Bluff. Death followed heart disease after acute indigestion. She was a Wesleyan graduate of 1876 and a writer of children stories recently completed for Christmas. Survived by three children Jackson Lane Prentiss Stillwell and Roxilane Edwards.
Tifton August 5 report shows no record sale volume yet but prices hold steady. In three market days the season totals 80 346 pounds sold at an average 24 94 cents per pound with Friday sales of 17 282 pounds bringing 3 920 84.
In Thomasville on a Friday afternoon lightning struck a small tenant house on the Ireland place six miles from the city. One colored woman was killed instantly, another fatally injured, and a third woman with children severely shocked. The house siding was torn off and set on fire while the infant’s clothing caught fire but was extinguished before harm.
Judge Z A Littlejohn presided over the Bank of versus J H Moon matter at ten in the morning in Harris County. Judge Munro of Muscogee County was disqualified. A temporary injunction restraining a Moon homestead receiver was discussed prior to the hearing. The case involves about $400.
