A grocer announces continued order calling by solicitors and delivery wagons to serve customers, adding two new wagons to strengthen service. The note emphasizes staying in the field for the trade, despite a $300 license, and pledges timely house calls to secure orders.
The pork pit collapsed as J E Slover & Co E W Bailey & Co and A Helhoiz & Co failed. Rumors tied A M Wright and John Cudahy to bubbling mispriced meat contracts. Prices plunged from around 18 to losses over 8 a barrel in forty minutes with further shocks as North American Provision Co Wright Haughry and Cudahy failed. Lard and ribs also dropped before partial recoveries.
A mass meeting at the Commercial Club rooms in Birmingham favored repealing the Sherman silver law. Congressman Hawkhead spoke for silver, urged temporary suspension pending a substitute, and endorsed an income tax and repeal of the ten percent tax on state banks.
