Washington reports a coming showdown between fundamentalists and liberals. Observers say the clash will decide if fundamentalist rule or liberal reform prevails, not on one issue but across broad public morals and policy.
Ex service men of Sumter county will be guests of the American Legion at a fish fry Tuesday night at 7 30 at the American Legion hall. This is the last regular meeting before the state meet at Athens and a record attendance is expected. Delegates elected to the state convention are W L Bell T W Thomas and James A Fort with alternates C W Walters M M Morris and Elmore Oliver.
An Athens dispatch reports Greece has moved two regiments toward the Greek Bulgarian border and is drafting an ultimatum to Bulgaria. If rejected, troops may be sent into Bulgaria.
An Atlanta paper manufacturer calculates the volume of paper from the Scopes evolution trial in Dayton Tennessee. Notes, legal documents and publicity filled newspapers daily from July 6 onward, potentially supplying Tennessee schools with textbooks and still leaving stock.
Mrs. Mary Ziegler, 22, renounces all claims to Rev. Roscoe Carl Zeigler to spare him federal Mann act charges and to allow his marriage to Margaret Roberts. Zeigler, once a preacher linked to a racist group, pursued Miss Roberts after meeting her in New Brunswick. She seeks divorce. he hopes to wed once free, while she keeps her two children and seeks happiness apart.
Atlanta August 3 The committee substitute bill to amend the constitution to allow a classification tax was reported to the house and expected for early week consideration. Governor Walker backs the measure which would authorize levying tax on cash stocks and bonds, notes and other intangibles, excluding franchise value. Continued on Page Six.
Governor Clifford today sent to the senate committee investigating the State Highway department his file on his approval of John Holder as chairman. He renewed his charges against Holder and said he is willing to testify, though he believes no new information would be gained.
Chicago August 3 nearly sixty known gunmen and bootleggers were rounded up last night in raids by detectives on robber hangouts and grog shops. The arrests followed the Drake hotel robbery that left three dead, two of them robbers.
Philadelphia August 3 Lloyd S Tenney Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics United States Department of Agriculture told members of the American Institute of Cooperation that the success of 1 784 000 American farmers representing 2 500 000 000 annually hinges on each farmer. He said the pyramid of cooperation is built from over a million blocks and the failure of any single block weakens the whole structure.
Deputy Sheriff Sellars of Montgomery Alabama arrived in Americus to take R. B. King, former Sumter resident, arrested Saturday afternoon by Sheriff McArthur. King faces Montgomery charges of taking mortgaged property out of state to defraud, linked to a Buick. He surrendered willingly, denying fraud and saying he had spent weeks in Charlotte prior to returning near Americus.

The Board of County Commissioners resolved Monday to seek federal and state aid to complete Route Three from a point where hard surfaced paving ends at the county line. A financing guarantee for the survey was adopted and turned over to District Engineer Alderman of the highway department. Preparations aim to start paving next year around April 1, with Plains road paving due by November 1. The county will deploy its road crew to repair and regrade all roads, and no new paving will begin until county roads are in good condition. He allegedly shot Mrs. Vivian Tomlin Peers a model who refused him then killed H. G. Carter and Detective Sergeant J Harvey Burke who intervened. Willis Britt the chauffeur of the car carrying the shooter was seriously wounded in the valley where the first shooting occurred.

IS SOUGHT SAN FRANCISCO Aug 3 Henry Schwartz vice president and general manager of the Pacific Cellu loses company who was supposed to have met death in his own laboratory at Walnut Creek last Thursday by explosion is being sought today by Sheriff R R Veale. Dr A J Nelson a dental expert who worked on Schwartz s teeth declared after an examination of the charred body found in Schwartz s laboratory that it was not that of Schwartz. Schwartz carried 180000 life insurance. Joe Rodrigues laborer has been missing since the explosion and experts have advanced the theory that the body found is that of Rodrigues.

He boarded the Central train to Macon before detection, weighing about 175 pounds with a heavy black mustache, prompting Macon police to be alerted for possible arrest.
