Stalwart conservative forces rally on one side while leaders like Borah LaFollette Johnson contend for influence. Six months ago renominating Harding without contest seemed assured.

New President Calvin Coolidge Sworn In At Farmhouse

Vice President Calvin Coolidge became president at 2 47 am eastern time after the death of President Harding. He took the oath from his father at the family farmhouse in Plymouth Vermont where he was born. The oath text was telephoned from White House officials in Washington. He is the first president to take the oath from his father.

Calvin Coolidge 29th vice president and 4th from Massachusetts. Born Plymouth Vermont July 4 1872. Columbus Ga Aug 3 A permit for an new bank building has been issued to W C Bradley president of the Third National and Columbus Savings Bank The institution will be in North Highlands suburb but Bradley would not state if it is a branch or new concern.

Workmen completed rebuilding and repairing the Americus Oil Co plant gins. The eight Consolidated gins are now electrically equipped for operation this season. R A Slappey, longtime gin supervisor, will again manage the plant.

Doctor Lovett Holds Sumter Conference in Sumter Church

Dr Lovett presiding elder of the Americus district conducted the quarterly Sumter conference for the Smithville work. Reports show the work well organized with good attendance. Lovett preached at 11 o clock and a basket dinner followed the service on the grounds.

DuBose Predicts Extra Session Of General Assembly

Representative DuBose of Clark, a veteran on appropriations and rules, predicted no tax reform this session and an extraordinary session may be called by Governor Walker. The House Agriculture Committee favorably reported the Senate bill to eliminate all appropriations for the state port and harbor commission.
