Reports from April 47 describe a looming naval clash near Manila Cavite as Spanish and American forces prepare. Admiral Mouteyy commands the American fleet at Manila while British and other observers monitor movements. A 60 hour ETA for American arrival and an anticipated three day battle loom, with patrols and dispatches signaling heightened tension.
A historical medical ad extols Dr Pierce's Favorite Prescription as a cure for weakness and disorders of women, claiming it restores health, nerves, and virility, treats irregularities, and suits wives and mothers. It notes the product's Buffalo origin and praises its safety and efficacy through testimonials.
April 25 reports say John Sherman resigned as secretary of state at a cabinet meeting. He cites impaired health after a lifetime of public service and will retire from public life at age 76. The bombardment of Matanzas on Cuba’s north coast began this morning by Sampson’s fleet. Vorts are being knocked down and many Spaniards killed. This marks the first fighting of the war.
