In Leesburg Georgia a Black man Mitchell Daniel was found shot dead near town amid claims of inflammatory anti white talk by Black residents. Earlier a Black man attempted to force entry into Mrs. William Laramore’s room during a racially charged incident. Also notes the death of Sheridan Shook in New York, longtime theater and hotel proprietor and Republican political figure.
Nearly one hundred Sultana disaster survivors gathered in Cleveland for the thirty-fifth anniversary observance. The convention focused on officer reports and addresses, noting continued yearly declines in membership due to deaths. Advices from Apia dated April 15 report a clash between friendly natives and rebels near Vailalo Island. About 100 rebels were killed or fatally wounded as Ensign J. R. Monaghan and Lieutenant P. H. Lansdale of the Philadelphia Navy Yard were severely harmed and later died. The deserter claim says Monaghan and Lansdale were retreating when a chief and his wife alerted guards. Medical examiners confirmed the fatalities and injuries.
Berlin papers April 27 argue Captain Coghlan should face strict punishment for his remarks at a private dinner, insisting it was public and criminal. They note McKinley told the German ambassador he disapproved and urged a display of goodwill to William II. Also reported, Fourth Virginia mustered out at Savannah with veterans sent home on special trains and Colonel Taylor addressing the troops.
