Seven Applicants Stand for Naval Academy Cadetship

Seven candidates appeared before the examining committee for the Naval Academy appointment from the district. Mental tests were completed by professors from Sumter Fort Valley and Hawkinsville, with Dr Miller as physical examiner. Louis Lester missed the session. the seven remaining included Callaway Marshallville Burt Americus Bryant Andersonville Solomon Americus Harrell Lumpkin Hil Tippettville. The top two will advance, with the highest general average going to Annapolis if he passes final exams.

Georgia to push Columbian Exposition exhibit in Chicago

Georgia plans active fundraising to support its 1893 Columbian Exposition display in Chicago. Governor Northen faces constitutional limits on state appropriations and asks residents of Sumter and other counties to contribute to a general fund to cover exhibit preparation, removal, and return. Missionaries Pruett will visit Americus with lectures and a reception, highlighting a Chinese costume exhibit and missionary work in China. A local baseball club is planned in Americus with O A Coleman as potential manager.

Horrible death of ex convict guard Bridges near Kramer

Intelligence reached the city last night of the killing of ex convict guard Bridges at Kramer on the Sam road. He was run over about 7 30 oclock by an extra train and his body ground to a pulp. He had been drinking heavily and is believed to have been in a drunken stupor on the track. No blame attaches to train officials. Bridges was a single man and home was in Augusta. The coroner of Wilcox county has taken charge of the remains.

Conductors Excursion to McLendon Promises Big Turnout

The Order of Railway Conductors plans a May 6 excursion to McLendon Paradise with special trains from Helena and Montgomery. Tickets already sold suggest about a thousand riders. A band, pavilion, barbecue, and ample shade promise a festive event. each car will carry its own conductor for passenger safety. Round trip from Americus is $1.00. other points priced accordingly. Last night South West Georgia hosted a well attended dance with about fifteen couples.
