The Times-Recorder launches a five day educational series by Dr. J. A. LePrince on eliminating the malaria and dengue mosquito scourge. The complete survey and recommendations aim to uplift the county's health, labor, and economy as daily installments appear for five days.
A large courthouse meeting formed the Sumter County Mosquito Elimination association with John W. Shiver as temporary chairman and Dr. J A LePrince as principal speaker. Permanent officers were elected and plans set for countywide clubs, executive committees, school and Boy Scout involvement, and possible county financial aid via the board of roads and revenues.
A fire in East Street tenement district claimed twelve lives and wounded twenty as residents fled in night clothing. Police and firefighters suffered burns while rescuing occupants. Michael Kaufman alerted authorities, saving others.
A Sumter County survey conducted April 12 to 24, 1928, examined malaria prevalence and control prospects, and dengue fever mosquito sources in Americus and vicinity. Findings identify numerous drainable ponds near farms as key malaria sources. drainage and habitat changes can reduce risk, while intermittent wet depressions hinder natural mosquito predators. Atlanta April 27 Efficiency and economy in marketing will result from the general adoption of standard grades for eggs, according to United States Department of Agriculture officials. Tentative grades focus on shell quality, air cell, albumin and yolk, and germ development, while size color and weight influence market value but not edible quality, the department says.
George J. Baldwin, a Savannah businessman who served with the government during the war, has been elected president of the Savannah Board of Trade. Baldwin recently returned to his Savannah home.
More than 150 cases against alleged violators of prohibition laws will come up in the May term of the federal court opening May 7 in Macon. Thirty three offenders have already pleaded guilty before Judge William H. Barrett.
Three memorial day crisis reports from Georgia include Jimmie O. Williams a 57 year old white man who died by carbolic acid near Register after heavy drinking and leaves a wife. In Griffin Roswell Hill Drake president of City National Bank killed himself on the coping around his first wife's grave with several women present.
April 27 report from Lumpkin says C G Fuller was found dead by suicide in early morning. Coroner's inquest ruled death self inflicted with evidence supporting this. Fuller, a respected resident from near Atlanta, aged 65, leaving a sister Mrs J B Tanner of Cataula and several sons in Atlanta. Remains sent to old home near Atlanta for interment.
About thirty five practicing veterinarians from Georgia attended a special meeting in Tifton on Wednesday. Two sessions were held at Hotel Myon with talks by Dr. Peter F. Bahnsen state veterinarian and other officials including Dr. A L Hirleman hog cholera control, Dr. A G Richardson dean at the State College of Agriculture, Dr. W M Burson of Athens and Dr T A Burney formerly state veterinarian of Ohio now with Pitman Moore Serum.
Ludville April 27 The question of taxation will be the paramount problem for the coming legislature. C W Hamrick, the county’s representative, says no solution is proposed by him.
Albany April 27. W F Spaythe field secretary of the American Automobile Association works to organize a branch to be known as the Albany Motor club.
Prohibition officers reported seizing three copper tanks and a quantity of whisky at the residence of Jim Harris in Girard Alabama. Harris was arrested on a charge of violating prohibition laws amid a report describing the raid between weather boarding and ceiling of walls.
From all parts of the county comes reports of farmer trouble over labor. Farmers watch for a nocturnal labor recruiter who moves workers out of the county. Officers are trying to intercept individuals aiming to take labor away.
Deputy Sheriff Fields, in Lake Park district, arrested Jim Gumsby after finding a pistol in his pocket while seeking a different suspect. The April 27 report from Valdosta notes the arrest followed questioning.
Mr and Mrs L Morgan of Fort Meade Florida visit Americus for a week joined by Miss Mary Morgan staying at local accommodations.
A soft-shell egg was recently exhibited in Juliette, noted for its shape size and color matching a day-old chick, particularly the head and neck.
Atlanta reports an early watermelons arrival with a solid car load destined for a local produce house. Merchants note it is unusual for watermelons to reach the area before June while praising a good season that beat the weatherman. A large shipment of green corn also arrived in solid refrigerating cars signaling strong southern harvests.
Chicago, April 27. A lesson in reducing overhead expense and lowering clothing prices will be offered at the National Association of Retail Clothiers tenth anniversary convention and exposition in the last week of September. Executive director Charles E. Wry says every addressing participant will stress this topic.
HOT SPRINGS Ark April 27 The library building of tomorrow must be a vast distributing and service plant visited daily by crowds rather than a dusty mausoleum of books Joseph L Wheeler of Youngstown Ohio told the American Library Association. He warned that poor location reduces circulation and raises overhead costs citing the sixty largest libraries where unit cost per circulation runs about 14 cents and two cities with bad locations double that figure.
Richmond diary reports Celia Shevick, 16, found unconscious near her home under a railroad viaduct after an all night search. Police believe she was criminally assaulted, her skull fractured, and doctors fear for her recovery after she was rushed to the hospital.
In Haworth Oklahoma on April 27, Thomas Hamil a planter his wife and daughter Mrs Tope and the latter's ten year old son were shot to death when they were called to the door of the Hamil home. Two men rode to the house on horseback and fired. The five year old daughter of Mrs Tope is probably fatally wounded. The attackers’ identities are not yet known.
Washington reports new State Department presentations to the British government requesting friendly cooperation to prevent vessels flying the British flag from engaging in liquor traffic between American and foreign ports, as efforts continue to curb rum smuggling.
Thomasville April 27 Joe Lewis was convicted on seven counts of writing letters signed with the Klan demanding money. The jury set two to three years on each count, totaling a minimum of fourteen and a maximum of twenty-one years, in the state penitentiary. This marks the first such case recorded here.
Americas friends for Rev William Russell Owens of Macon will be interested to know his congregation has presented him a purse to defray expenses for a trip to Europe. He will attend the World Religious Conference in Stockholm Sweden in June and then extend his journey to Palestine and other places of interest.
The Seventh District Masonic convention will convene at the Masonic Temple on May 2 at 10 oclock. Local officials announce the two day session with a feature ladies night at the city auditorium.

Lafayette April 27 George Baker was hanged here for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Morton in Durham County last March. The trap opened at 11 53 and 13 minutes later the body was cut down. A crowd of about 200 watched as Baker, in his cell, proclaimed his innocence and urged others to stay out of trouble. His parents and wife traveled from Rome to witness the execution. Ralph Baker, also convicted, remained in a jail room.
Five separate bomb explosions on Ruhr railways disrupt traffic and cut railway, telegraph, and telephone communications during the night. French headquarters call the damage the worst since occupation began as Germans attempt to push a customs barrier inward but large quantities of goods are seized by the French.
George O. Marshall county farm demonstration agent announces a cooperative hog sale at the Americus pens next Wednesday May 2. Sumter county farmers offer livestock and bidding is expected to be lively as hogs are in prime condition fed on corn making them kill hard.
Washington April 27 Frederick Ryder American consul at Vancouver instructed by Secretary Hughes to investigate the firing on of the American schooner Siloam by the Canadian Fisheries patrol which resulted in the death of one crew member.
