The Americus Barbecue club will entertain with its first dinner of the new 1923 season Thursday at 1 o'clock on the cue grounds recently prepared for weekly meetings. Members urged to attend and share in the pleasures. C. J. Clark is president and has been organizing the event.

New York April 24 Richard del Valle a Cuban sugar planter was arrested at a local hotel on a grand larceny charge in a case filed by Julian Lavin who says Del Valle obtained $52 000 in negotiable securities in exchange for forged sugar warehouse certificates. A second Cuban planter linked to the scheme was arrested last January and a civil suit may involve a third party.

A noon roof fire caused by a kitchen spark damaged the house on Factory Row owned by Lawson Stapleton and occupied by Charles Dorman. Estimated repair costs reach 600 dollars for the roof. furniture reportedly escaped damage.
CAMILLA April 24 A cyclone blamed as part of Mitchell county storm section tore a path about half a mile long and 300 yards wide near Vada on the Mitchell Decatur line. Timber was swept away. only a smokehouse owned by Bob Batison was destroyed. The event marks the third cyclone in two years for the area with a church at Vada said to have been destroyed thrice in thirty years. Heavy rains afterward damaged new crops.
Memorial Day will be observed in Americus under the United Daughters of the Confederacy Confederate Veterans Sons of Veterans World War veterans Boy Scouts and local students. The Rylander theater program starts at 10 30 a m with Hon John S Tilley of Alabama as chief speaker. Local U D C and S V groups gather at 10 a m at the Sumter county courthouse in uniform carrying flags for the parade to the theater.
Providence April 24 A tour of Southern textile centers by B C Meserve secretary of the National Association of Cotton Manufacturers concludes the industrial history of New England will be repeated in the South He says the trip was at the president's request and notes the South mirrors New England mill life of about 75 years ago in his forthcoming report to the association meeting.
New York April 24 Gerald Chapman Broadway mail bandit escaped from Atlanta federal prison on March 28. He was wounded and treated at St Marys hospital in Athens Georgia where night nurse Miss Goralen Ramey testified before Federal Commissioner Hitcheck. She denied aiding the escape but said she received a Chapman letter dated April 7 in Athens.

Nina Hewitt a 19 year old from Denton Texas lies in a Dallas hospital awaiting renowned surgeons. X ray reveals a nearly full grown water moccasin snake inside her stomach believed to have hatched from an egg swallowed during summer bathing. Doctors worry removal could injure her and have summoned specialists while they investigate how the reptile got there.

Former U S Senator Hoke Smith arrives in Atlanta from Washington to speak at Memorial Day exercises in Atlanta and at the Montgomery county school rally at Brewton Parker Institute. He will be honored with a Doctor of Laws degree by Oglethorpe University at next month’s commencement.
The United States announces a commission to meet with Obregon government representatives in Mexico City. Charles Warren and John Barton Payne will lead discussions aimed at closer understanding. The talks will avoid interference in Mexico's internal affairs or advising on its laws.
Sam Pickett, a negro, is employed by the city after a Saturday disturbance drew Chief Bragg and Officer Arrington. He is charged with resisting an officer and jailed 80 days for $25 bail. Sheriff Harvey and Summers noted a still alleged run by Sam Armstrong near Clyde Griffin place. Chief Bragg and Lieut. Worthy had earlier found a car tied to Armstrong. Sam escaped then but was parked today. Lois Harper, another negro present, is held as a material witness. Officers found whisky in tin cans ready for sale in the area.
