Train Runs Over Boy Killing a Negro on Track
Crushed to atoms the boy Adam Brookins aged about fifteen was killed by the Central passenger train No. 5 leaving the city for the South. The tragedy occurred four miles out as the engine could not avoid the unconscious victim who lay on the track. The father Prince Brookins mourns his son’s loss amid poverty and sorrow. The accident is blamed on a possible spell or fit that caused the boy to lie on the rails. The road master Captain Williams helped with a coffin funded by the railroad. Visitors to the coroner’s office reported a ghastly scene and a town still reeling from the event.
