Fire destroys Richardson building in Chattanooga

April 3 report says the Richardson building, the largest in Chattanooga, was gutted by fire between 1:30 and 2:00 am. Fire spread from a furnace, an alarm delay hampered response, and two men sleeping on the sixth floor escaped only after others were warned. One, Boyd Ewing, died attempting to descend a fire escape. the other, M. Patton, is missing. Loss estimated at 400000 with 200000 insured. Nearby structures and many offices were damaged. dozens of lawyers’ papers were burned. A young lawyer, Frank Carlock, was injured during rescue attempts.

In Balt, April 1, the Columbian Equipment Co of New York filed suit against Highland Avenue and Belt railroad in U S court. Judge Bruce ruled there was equity in the bill and ordered a receiver to be appointed, with a stay on interference in the road’s operation.
