A short circuit at a motion picture theater in Tacubaya City, a suburb of Mexico City, triggered a blaze last night. Twenty six people were known dead and at least 56 injured in the panic that followed as rescue work continued.
Special taxpayers in Americas and Sumter county must pay levies by April 15 to avoid a 20 percent penalty under a new law. Payments after April 15 go through the state revenue department with no option to waive. County Tax Collector I B Small notes the deadline and lists many liable businesses such as auto agencies, barbershops, billboards, dry cleaning, hotels, restaurants, real estate dealers, and others.
Death reported from Abbeville of John Henry Williams, longtime Leslie area farmer now living with his daughter in Columbus. Funeral at Pleasant Grove church near Huntington with interment in its cemetery. Survived by widow in Leslie, two daughters Mrs Stanley Stanford, Mrs Homer Oxford, Mrs Clyde Bradley, son Henry Williams, brothers Charles Williams and Babe Williams, half-brother J M Johnson. He was 66.
Washington April 2 Harlan Fiske Stone of New York was chosen by President Coolidge as attorney general He formerly served as dean of Columbia University law school and will take office shortly to lead the department.
A Lloyd dispatch from Port Sudan reports the British steamship Frangestan with 1200 pilgrims on board is on fire between decks en route to Jeddah. The fire is spreading in the hold where cotton is stored. The Frangestan is accompanied by other vessels and due to reach Sudan port tomorrow. the steamship Tagistan has departed to assist.
Montezuma built a 13-3 lead, then Americus fought back to close to 17-14. Dudley relieved Kimble in the fourth and spun effective pitching as outfielders Ansley Sutton and Hooks covered well. Hamilton and Maffett led Montezuma, Felton worked well for Americus, with Stukes Sutton Ferrell Hines Ainsley Allen Tye among the Americus lineup.
Washington April 2 Hon duran forces under General Ferrera are reported to have carried the outlying defenses of Tegucigalpa the Honduran capital in renewed attacks which started at 5 o clock Tuesday morning and to have captured a very important military position.
County Superintendent f W Dupree announces winners of the county school contest held at Third District Agricultural and Mechanical College. Plains High led in grammar schooling and high school events, Union High and Pleasant Grove earned multiple top honors, with numerous schools scoring in both literary and athletic categories. The living cup trophy went to Plains High as every school participated.
In Washington on April 2 a breakfast conference with about a dozen Republican senators considered methods to speed up legislation in the senate. The White House hosted the discussion to seek faster lawmaking and legislative efficiency.
Senator Robert M. Follette of Wisconsin and Governor Al Smith of New York led the race for party delegates as early returns from seven states arrived. Reports were delayed by disrupted wire service caused by a severe nationwide storm sweeping the country.
The Americus Playground Association earned 106 dollars from A Little Bit of Broadway at the Rylander. Miss Mary Dudley and Miss Mary Glover praised all cast and crew. Funds will relieve association debt and cover other needs.

An Atlantic Coast Line Florida Special passenger train wrecked near Woodford Virginia. The engineer was killed and several passengers reported killed or injured. Reports reached Fredericksburg.
Washington reports include former investigator H L Scaife accusing DOJ of failing to prosecute war frauds. He tells the Daugherty inquiry that Weeks Daugherty and others should face indictment for conspiracy to defraud the United States in the Wright Martin aircraft matter. He cites earlier blocked inquiries and post appointment letters.
Dalton Ga April 2 C J Hayden of Atlanta is slated to address the Dalton Civitans Friday April 4 on the possibilities of apple culture in Whitfield County.
An Atlantic Coast Line Florida Special derailment near Woodford on the Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac line leaves Engineer W L Snelson dead, Fireman J G Gravatt seriously injured, a dining car worker with a dislocated shoulder, and several passengers shaken. Cause of the wreck is unknown.
Leslie April 2 E L Wilson today purchased controlling interest in the Johnson Bolton Company a leading mercantile establishment here and will consolidate the business with The Pioneer Store which he established about four years ago Wilson was manager of the Johnson Bolton Co for nearly twenty years and had been successful since starting in business with the consolidation of the Pioneer and Hohe Bolton firms Mr Wilson will remain at the helm of the merged operation.
Washington April 2 The oil committee revived wrangling over relevancy of testimony on Republican contributions. George White former DNC chairman testified that Doheny gave nine thousand nine hundred dollars in one sum and later twenty five thousand to cover a deficit. White disputed Doheny’s claimed seventy five thousand contribution.
A committee adjourned after a brief 15 minute session due to the absence of other witnesses, with plans to reconvene on Monday to continue hearings and collect remaining testimony.
