Violent Panhandle Storm Claims Three Children in Storm Cellar

Severe winds hail and rain struck the southeastern Panhandle and the North and Central Panhandle areas. Three children perished in a Hardeman County storm cellar as floods and debris caused widespread damage in Clarendon Memphis Lakeview Estelline Quanah and Childress. Neighbors recovered the bodies after a wall of water entered the shelter.

Baby Born During Blackout at Northwest Texas Hospital

A girl was born at Northwest Texas Hospital during a power outage when flashlights lit the delivery room. The baby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Betts of Adrian, arrived at 7 29 p.m. weighing 7 pounds 4 1/2 ounces and 20 inches long. A nurse called the baby pretty and staff used five flashlights to assist delivery.

Police Radio Power Fails At Station

Emergency power failed at the police station last night when the main supply cut at 7 35 pm. The dead battery left no backup power prompting candle light, a radio car deployment, and ten extra patrolmen recalled as staff relayed orders by voice.

Fleck Upsets Hogan in Open Championship

Jack Fleck, a 32 year old Davenport municipal course operator from Iowa, upset Ben Hogan to win the Open with a 287 tied with Hogan after 72 holes. Hogan finished three strokes back at 72 after a tough final round error on the 18th. Hogan announced he would retire from serious competitive golf, saying he would play for fun.

Amarillo Storm Leaves Damage From Hail and Winds

A severe afternoon thunderstorm swept Amarillo with hail up to golf ball size and winds 30 to 70 mph. The storm damaged roofs and porches, toppled trees, and knocked out lights, mainly in north and west Amarillo and Pleasant Valley, with rainfall totals reaching 1.81 inches citywide.

Storm disrupts KGNC-TV in Amarillo studio outage

Storm winds and hail ripped the microwave unit from its moorings at KGNC-TV and caused roof damage. A bucket brigade cleared water while engineers, cameramen, and staff worked to restore service. The station returned to air around 10 PM and aired the 10 30 p m news via improvised facilities.

Trio Quizzed in Series of House Burglaries

Three men were questioned by city police in a weekend burglary spree. One was chased from Mrs. Ray Wheatley’s home at 2113 Harrison. A second man was arrested in a nearby car and the third after a chase in the 300 block of North Van Buren. The suspects face inquiries into Burglaries at Wheatley 2113 Harrison Herrman 2122 Hayden and Blackburn 2107 Van Buren.
