The 29th annual National Cow Calling Contest at Roberts County Park drew 47 participants and 1,200 spectators. Barbara Bayless won the grandmother division, Jane Bright the women’s division, and Allan Clark and Dennis Dodson topped the men’s division with $50 first prizes and $25 second prizes.

A tractor-trailer crashed off the US 60 overpass in Canyon killing a Pennsylvania couple, Bruce and Catherine Robertson of Mt. Holly, Pa, and injuring their year-old daughter Holly Jo Robertson. The rig loaded with cantaloupes plowed through railing, fell 14 feet to US 97, and burst into flames. Fire units extinguished the blaze as cantaloupes blocked three lanes. the driver, listed as Mrs. Robertson, reportedly fell asleep before the crash.
