Cow Calling Contest Draws Huge Crowd in Miami

The 29th annual National Cow Calling Contest at Roberts County Park drew 47 participants and 1,200 spectators. Barbara Bayless won the grandmother division, Jane Bright the women’s division, and Allan Clark and Dennis Dodson topped the men’s division with $50 first prizes and $25 second prizes.

Colorado legislators backed down on halting coal slurry pipelines but approved a bill to credit Colorado for water used to move coal to out of state destinations. The eminent domain amendment was dropped after House pressure, leaving a provision to credit water used in interstate compacts. Senator Richard Spash opposed slurry pipelines citing environmental impact and higher water use.

Fiery Valley Crash Kills Parents and Injures Child

A tractor-trailer crashed off the US 60 overpass in Canyon killing a Pennsylvania couple, Bruce and Catherine Robertson of Mt. Holly, Pa, and injuring their year-old daughter Holly Jo Robertson. The rig loaded with cantaloupes plowed through railing, fell 14 feet to US 97, and burst into flames. Fire units extinguished the blaze as cantaloupes blocked three lanes. the driver, listed as Mrs. Robertson, reportedly fell asleep before the crash.

Globe-News Staff Scores Six UPI Awards in 1976

Amarillo Globe-News staffers won six awards in the 1976 UPI editors contest. James L Whyte earned two firsts for editorial writing on Northwest Texas Hospital. Bowser and Cox shared spot news honors for a story on an Amarillo woman who shot a prowler, who later died. Mulherin won two prizes for photography, Marlow earned for a car crash image, and LaPrade for a Potter County jail visiting day feature. Awards were presented at Wimberly during the Texas UPI Editors meeting.
