A massive squall line spawned tornadoes and severe thunderstorms across Texas Oklahoma and Kansas late Saturday into Sunday. Brisk winds toppled trees damaged roofs and disrupted power while a Brady Texas plane landed safely to avoid the funnel.
Ford Motor Co rejects a CIO UAW proposal for arbitration to resolve wage gaps and prepares for a possible Monday strike. Ford industrial relations VP John S. Bugas says Ford is targeted by the union and hints at following GM’s lead if no settlement is reached. UAW represents about 140,000 Ford and 325,000 GM workers amid looming contract deadlines.
Retailers from several states attend the Pan handle Market Show inviting buyers for fall and holiday merchandise. Exhibits and sample rooms open 9 30 a m to 8 p m today and 9 a m to 6 p m Monday. Ed West says guides were sent to over 1 000 retailers. The show awards two 21 inch television sets to registered buyers. The event is for retailers only.
Rhea Raines, a Borden milkman on a delivery route, became locked inside a 50 degree back of a truck at 204 Crestway around 10 a.m. The door slammed shut as he re arranged bottles, and neighbor Kenny Nall, 12, heard his calls and freed him after about half an hour. The latch apparently slid closed while he was inside.

Ruben Valentino Ochoa, 18, of Amarillo, was found guilty of second degree murder in Tucumcari for the death of 54-year-old Andrea Gutierrez. He received a 25 to 30 year prison term and was ordered to pay all court costs.
The ear splitting but melodic cry of Miami ranch hand J. D. Keehn won him the world champion cow caller title at the seventh annual international contest held yesterday in Miami.
Amarillo held its first all tourist program at Ellwood Park last night with visitors from about a dozen states enjoying western entertainment despite a dust storm. Mayor Art Jordan welcomed guests while Kenneth Grenewald urged them to have a good time and John McCarty introduced out of state visitors. The Gay family from New York City was named the largest tourist family and received a western style barbecue apron set. Leonard Cain of Hartford and others from Dumas, S&M Drug, Gunn Bros, and the Dogie Day Western Band contributed to the event.
Senator McClellan urged the State Department to act with allies to halt trade with Communist China. He cited Defense Department figures showing Western nations’ trade reaching a five year high in January, with over half carried on British ships. He criticized Britain and other allies for enabling commerce with China while Americans remain in Communist Sail. He noted the Foreign Operations Administration admitted strategic materials reached China on the Swedish vessel Sunnanbris under lawful merchandise documents. He pointed to a Danish or Finnish flagged tanker and a Hong Kong company linked to Chinese interests. In Cheyenne delegates from five states begin a three day convention on increasing U S 87 travel with a Henry Ford International Memorial Highway preview.
The NAACP set a deadline for school desegregation and warned of court action if local boards fail to act before next fall. Georgia Governor Griffin opposed any forced integration, while Senator Eastland denounced the Supreme Court ruling on segregation as illegal and said the South would not accept integrated schools.
NAACP delegates from 16 states and the District of Columbia held an emergency conference to map a response to the May 31 desegregation order. They directed all branches to act promptly under the court decision while schools face orders to end segregation.

Mrs. Clair McCollum at McCollum Food Store watched a customer and a companion reach into the open register and steal 130 dollars after a 75 cent sale. The clerk chased the thief twice but the man escaped to a waiting car in the alley. Police sought the pair last night.
