San Antonio reports the 165 millionth American born at 6:51 a.m. CST as Jack Saulers Jr. and Mrs. Saulers celebrate at Baptist Memorial Hospital. The census clock at Washington flashed blue to mark the national total. Saulers seniors’ reaction was muted.

An elderly couple in their 70s fired on and killed Marion County Deputy Sheriffs Bob Wooten and Curtis Youngblood and Ocala Assistant Police Chief M O Tuck during a barricaded-house standoff that lasted about an hour. Authorities said more than 1,000 rounds were fired as the Lindleys surrendered after tear gas and heavy police pressure. A neighbor dispute sparked the clash, which began when Douglas Wingfield reported a shot after warning the couple off his property.

A 15 month old girl, Neta Lynn Bair, was saved yesterday when passersby freed her from a car window where her neck wedged. Rescuers used artificial respiration and oxygen at Peerless Lanes office before she regained consciousness and was taken to Amarillo Osteopathic Hospital. Her parents were shopping nearby.

A late night blaze damaged Capitol Furniture Co. and Bargain Store at 405 E 4th in Amarillo. Three fire companies battled smoke, dragging out smoldering furniture. damage to new and used items was extensive. Fire officials suspect a paint room beneath a staircase started the fire. the building is owned by Mrs. J R Wallace and served by fire companies 1 3 and the aerial unit.
Herbert C. Noelke a 41 year old rancher of Sheffield was killed instantly eight miles northeast of Brownwood when struck by a truck while changing a tire. The driver George F. Hartshorn 30 Texarkana Ark was charged with negligent homicide.
