Panhandle harvest starts around June 20 to 25 with heavy outside combine demand June 10 to 12 in Crosby Briscoe Floyd Hale Castro Swisher counties and nearby areas. A truck surplus exists early but may tighten as rail movement increases. The labor picture is a surplus now but expected to turn to a high demand by June 10 across the Panhandle.

Five thousand additions to Northwest Texas Methodist churches in the last seven months were reported by nine district superintendents at the 38th annual conference. A memorial service honored two deceased ministers and a widow. Bishop Charles C. Selecman defined a great church as active in worship fellowship and world service. He spoke of minister placements, the cabinet’s scheduling, and urged Sabbath rest. The session included invocation and a sermon, with continuation on page 2.

Burglars Steal $7000 From Amarillo Livestock Auction Safes
Tenacious burglars broke into two safes at the Amarillo Livestock Auction Co. Friday night and escaped with about $7,000 cash plus receipts and coins. Investigators cited use of chisels and crowbars as they penetrated the main safe after disabling a smaller roll-away safe. The haul largely stemmed from a Tuesday sale when a Rockford feeder paid $5,600 in cash for 60 head of cattle. The business is owned by Eddie Johnson and Jay Taylor.

Leedey Tornado Leaves Town in Ruins and Toll
Early reports describe a tornado striking Leedey Oklahoma about 8 PM, devastating the town of 600. Rescue workers found at least five bodies with six dead or hurt. ambulances and doctors were en route from Elk City. The storm also affected Higgins, Shattuck, Arnett, and surrounding areas as debris and downed lines hampered communications.
