Taylor Named to Missouri Beef Packers Board

Jay Taylor, longtime Amarillo cattleman and partner in Amarillo Livestock Auction Company and Western Stockyards, elected to Missouri Beef Packers board. He operates four Texas and New Mexico ranches and is a former president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

Senate approves 5 percent tax on untaxed income

The Senate voted 52 to 24 to apply a flat 5 percent tax to forms of income not currently taxed, including half of capital gains. A Kennedy plan for a graduated tax on tax free income was defeated 52-24, while a separate effort to curb tax avoidance through farming was rejected 50-29. The session aimed to speed tax reform.

Comet Due at Yuletide Brighten Christmas Night

RENQ Nevada. A comet is approaching Earth from near Jupiter and will peak on Christmas Day. Curator Richard Norton of the Max C. Fleischmann Atmospherium Planetarium at the University of Nevada says it will be bright enough to see with the naked eye and may even be visible during the day. The planetarium's annual Christmas show explores the idea that the Star of Bethlehem could have been a comet.

Judge Denies Bond for Suspect in Beighle Slaying

Panhandle area man Ben Alex Hassler Jr. is jailed in Carson County on a murder with malice charge in the Beighle case. Hassler, 28, disappeared before a lie test and was captured in Los Angeles by FBI agents on a flight-to-avoid-prosecution warrant. The 69 year old Edith M. Beighle was found dead after a reported assault. a cord from an electric blanket was noted.

Toy Gun Used in Daylight Store Robbery at Toot n Totum

A bandit, possibly armed with a toy pistol, robbed a clerk at the Toot n Totum Store at 3115 Plains Blvd Saturday afternoon. Miss Juanita Provence reported the man, about 30, entered as a customer, bought items, then demanded cash. He fled south with an undetermined amount after warning the clerk not to leave for two minutes.

Mrs Edna Susan Johnson aged 63 of 6607 Green Haven Rd died on arrival at Northwest Texas Hospital after a van collision with a car three miles east of Panhandle. Her husband Harold and Bobby Earl Sheller were under observation as DPS investigated the head on crash around 6:20 PM.
