Security Funds To Go Begging
About $400,000 of Social Security funds due wage earners or their heirs is going begging. The total comes from small sums for thousands who turned 65 this year and for estates of those who died after paying Social Security taxes. Actuaries expected 300,000 accounts closed this year, but only 30,000 closed in nine months. Officials say the situation will fix itself in future years as lump sums rise and incentives grow to claim them.
