The 1930 Amarillo city directory released Monday estimates population at about 49,380, up 8 percent from 45,632. It tallies 9,876 families with 4,250 home owners and 3,157 renters, noting apartments and duplexes house 863 and 1,263 families respectively.
Ruth Alexander, killed in a crash as she began a projected transcontinental flight, is en route to Irving Kansas accompanied by friend Mrs. Fred C. Lindley. Airplanes showered the train with flowers as it departed San Diego and a final salute was given.
The Texas Chiefs of Police and City Marshall Unions annual meeting started in Beaumont with most officers attending. Dallas San Antonio El Paso and Houston pistol shooting teams prepared to compete during the three day session led by President Ranger Captain Tom R Hickman who was absent.
Eve Ve Verka, internationally known entertainer and author, will write a series for the Amarillo Globe News on charm health and beauty. The articles promise inner sources of beauty, practical guidance, and answers to reader questions, with reveals from salons in this country and Europe. The first piece appears tomorrow.
A Potter County Library corner named Easy Books attracts young readers four to ten. Mothers have not yet discovered two shelves, but children explore rich tales with colorful illustrations. Books range from primers to travel tales, with six to ten copies each and attractive design noted by librarian Mrs Ruth Detell.
Four men were burned to death when a fire tore through the Carl J. Weber Manufacturing plant in Toledo Ohio caused by the explosion of a liquor still. District Fire Chief Richard Lawler reported the blaze today as investigators worked to determine the cause and casualties.

The Tri-State Exposition showcases include Agricultural Department displays from 17 Panhandle counties and Panhandle Plains of Texas with New Mexico, Merchants Building featuring 60 merchants, Tri-State Poultry Show with about 3 000 birds, Hereford cattle herds across three states totaling 125, Dairy Cattle with 200 head, Swine with over 400 prize entries, Farm Implements a quarter million dollar display, Pet Stock with diverse global species, Rabbit and Cavy with 250 head, Automobile Show praised by city dealers as the most complete, Domestic Arts exhibits of handiwork.
Will E. Lowe a 40 year old McLennan County farmer was shot and killed by his 45 year old negro tenant Sim Knight after a dispute over division of sale proceeds and debts near Watt. Knight then killed himself to avoid a mob. Coroner ruled murder and death by own action. Funeral arrangements set for Lowe with burial at Mart.
The Panhandle event features women experts contending for first honors in domestic science with tempting preserves, jams and jellies. Fine Arts display colorfully varied works plus a large loan exhibit of masterpieces. Home Demonstration shows farm women products from across the Panhandle. School displays highlight student achievements in West Texas. Midway runs with 22 shows and 14 monster rides. Rodeo offers 100 contestants against outlaw beasts, top for five years. Opens at 2 pm. Spanish Nights Revue begins at 8:15 pm with song and dance and many other numbers.
The Supreme Council of Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons for the Southern Jurisdiction will hold its annual meeting in Dallas from September 23 to 26. It marks the first Texas meeting in history and the last time such a session will occur outside Washington, D C, according to officials. Sam P. Cochran, Sovereign Grand.
The Inspector General in Texas, second in office in the Supreme Council, and a tribute to the “Grand Old Man of Masonry in Texas” led to Dallas being selected as the meeting place.
Frances HaNum faced murder charges in Dallas today over the death of 40 year old Mrs. Catharine Hamilton who was fatally wounded. The case centered on the events surrounding Hamiltons death and the suspect's involvement is under investigation by local authorities.
A woman was slashed across the abdomen with a pocket knife Saturday night in an alleged assault. Police investigated the incident and seek any witnesses or information leading to the suspect.
