Mrs. George T. Thomas died at a local hospital at 1 pm after an eight month illness. She leaves her husband Dr. George T. Thomas and three daughters Georgie Winifred and Dorothy of 1500 Van Buren Street. Funeral plans are pending.
Washington reports a sharp decline in paupers in almshouses across the United States. January 1 figures show 78,090 inmates last year, down from 4,198 in 1910, with 71.5 paupers per 100 000 people. Males outnumber females more than twice.
John Snider former Amarillo police chief on trial denied illicit liquor transactions cited by J G Rye saying his raid and seizure were duties of an officer. Rye testified about a October booze raid and five gallons kept in a bank vault later handed to Moore county sheriff.

D S Hill a 70 year old of Mileton Center threw acid into Mayor Walter Longbrace and slashed his own throat as police tried to arrest him. Hill had been convicted last May for liquor law violations and had missed a fine payment leading to the arrest attempt. The mayor suffered severe facial burns and eye injuries with likely permanent scarring and possible loss of sight.
A blast at Mine No. 3 of Kemmerer Coal Company in Sublet Wyoming entombs 55 workers during repair work about 11:45 AM. Rescue teams fail to penetrate the portal as the mine fills with smoke. reports say a single blast occurred. A Mines Bureau rescue car is ordered to Sublet.
Plainview Elks visitors joined Amarillo Elks for a day of field events at the Elks club in Amarillo. Bridge games moved to members’ homes after a legal clarification.
John Moore, famed railroad poet and Amarillo Globe writer, is confined at home after a fall from a car he was coupling in the Santa Fe switchyards. A longtime railroad man and Safety First committee member, he expects to recover in a few days and return to duty. The report notes his family history in railroading and a local hotel coffee shop credit.
