Vice President Col. Juan D. Peron issued an extraordinary proclamation admitting a plot to overthrow the government was gaining support. He urged armed forces to stay loyal, named conspirators including politicians and capitalists, warned against factional divisions, and promised eventual free elections.
In a exclusive AP interview from Tokyo on Sept 14 Premier Prince Higashi Kuni urged Americans to bury hate and welcome Japan's peaceful new era. He stated America has won, Japan lost, and vowed freedom from militarist rule with gradual expansion of speech and press rights.
Twenty five Texas soldiers and sailors from the 131st Field Artillery and USS Houston survivors arrived in Washington after more than three and a half years as Japanese prisoners in Calcutta. Spokesman Sgt. C. R. Johnson of Jacksboro recounted the Lost Battalion ordeal, echoing Lt. Col. Winthrop Rogers of Wichita Falls who spoke of starvation and mistreatment.
The 36th Texas Division is to be deactivated as a federal unit after occupation service and return to the United States likely by year end. Many soldiers will transfer or be discharged based on points, with the Texas National Guard receiving its records and organization. Maj. Gen. John W. Dahlquist may leave for Germany. Brig. Gen. Robert Stack has acted in his absence. The division logged 132 days in continuous combat and helped break defenses toward Rome, then landed at Salerno and participated in the Allied drive through Italy and southern France before reaching Germany.
A group of Lost Battalion survivors arrived at a New York airport Tuesday night. John son recalls the Second Battalion’s march from Pearl Harbor to Fiji Java and Singapore then Burma, with camps, hunger, and harsh discipline before release.

Captain Lowell Hite, a Doolittle Raider prisoner of the Japanese, is welcomed home in Clovis New Mexico by about 60 to 70 townspeople after arriving from Earth. Relatives and friends flood the hotel lobby as his mother, Mrs. Robert P. Hite, sees her son for the first time since 1942.
Pvt. Almon N. Conger of Tacoma Washington is hailed as the millionth U.S. soldier redeployed from Le Havre France since VE Day. The 24 year old combat medic arrived in New York aboard the Queen Mary after the voyage.
In a wartime briefing the supreme commander warned impatience over surrender terms. He stressed careful procedure and said terms won’t be applied lightly. Japan reports many former leaders are in custody, while Koizumi committed harakiri and Tojo recuperates in a U S Army hospital.
General MacArthur directs that the stark facts of Japanese atrocities from the Philippines to New Guinea be told to the Japanese people. Japanese newspapers, with his staff approval, will publish a summary as an educational preface followed by detailed documentary evidence. Brig. Gen. Bonner Fellers calls it purely educational.
In Manila area 2,300 former prisoners of war say many Japanese think peace is a temporary pause ordered by the Emperor. They report resentment of soft treatment and recall brutal treatment while prisoners, with some urging harsher actions.
The War Department outlined a plan to release 13 000 physicians 25 000 nurses 3 500 dentists and numerous Army Medical Department officers to civilian life by year end 1945 with further releases by July 1946. Thresholds include reduced discharge points ages and new pre Pearl Harbor eligibility doubling the number of eligible personnel across doctors dentists nurses and support roles. By July 1946 the Army aims for 2 500 000 strength and release totals exceeding 30 000 doctors 10 000 dentists and 40 000 nurses.
