Army Gears Machinery To Release Eligibles in 40 Days

Washington Sept. 13 AP The War Department says the Army will discharge men faster than expected and aims to clear the backlog of eligible personnel within about 40 days. Maj Gen S G Henry testified the September release could reach 400,000, up from 250,000, with December targets growing toward 800,000 monthly capacity at fully staffed separation centers.

Lost Battalion Soldier from Texas Dies in Japanese Prison Camp

War Department notified Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carney of 310 Mississippi that their son Pvt. Wendell D. Carney born Sept. 11 1922 in Texas died July 22 1943 in a Japanese prison camp. He served with the Lost Battalion of the 131st Field Artillery and Texas forces before capture in Java in 1942.

Webster Is Freed After Lost Battalion Rescue

An Amarillo family learns Pvt. Oscar C Webster was liberated from a Japanese camp in Thailand and is now in an American hospital. Other Lost Battalion members from Texas, including M L Rea Miley Dove Jesse Butler and Humbert Griffith, are reported freed. Raymond Bowley of Amarillo died in a Siam prison camp January 26 1944.

Birney Moore and Virgie Lee Parish named in indictments by the Potter County Grand Jury. Moore, described as a negro, charged with murder.
