Lansing officials implement the 1925 Michigan subsidy that reduces taxes for commercial forest reserves. The state pays 5 cents per acre annually, with additional charges for soft and hard wood planting. Timber must be preserved for 20 to 30 years, after which a 25 percent stumpage tax applies. More than 250,000 acres may be listed this year as reforestation aims to revive cut-over lands. Louisiana experiments differ. Michigan leads in northern US forest restoration efforts.
