The postwar house-cleaning under Generalissimo Stalin extends beyond industry into government ministries, the Red Army, the Communist Party, and even intellectual and artistic life. Recent Moscow papers devote large sections to reprimands for inefficiency and exposes of misconduct.
A two line United Press dispatch from Moscow on July 17 said Zhukov was transferred to commandant of the Odessa military garrison with unconfirmed reports later confirmed. No Soviet announcement or Russian press notice appeared. Theories ranged from defense of Balkans near the Dardanelles to restoring order in Ukraine and a distant post for his ties with Eisenhower.
