Italy formally protested to the peace conference over Andrei Vishinsky remarks that Italian soldiers are better at running away than fighting. The Italian delegation called the comment opprobrious and said it unjustly reflected on the honor of Italians who served in the regular forces and the resistance. Two Rome citizens challenged Vishinsky to a duel.
The Agriculture Department told foreign food claimants that after Sept 30 they must secure meat imports themselves. Nations seeking U S meat will receive export licenses for a set poundage but must negotiate with American packers directly.

In Houston on September 12 Ed Luton aged 30 wrote a two page letter to his estranged wife while at a tavern juke box listening to It Makes No Difference Now. He then left the note at a telephone and was injured in a personal crisis involving a .22 caliber public safety item.
