Seale plans 178 veteran homes in Amarillo Hamlet Addition

Permits for the first 37 of 178 frame dwellings were issued to Seale Company of Amarillo. The project targets veterans, with two and three bedroom homes costing 8000 to 10000 dollars each. Located at Poplar and Magnolia, the 1.6 million dollar development aims for completion by mid 1952. Construction starts within a week. 90 days to finish first units.

Guard Divisions Alerted for Active Service Next Year

Washington Sept 12 The Army alerting Illinois and Ohio National Guard divisions for active duty early next year. The 37th Infantry from Ohio and the 44th from Illinois will report to Camp Polk Louisiana about Jan 15 and Camp Cooke California about Feb 15. Other guard units are on alert or training in Japan and the United States with movement to Europe planned for later this year.

Child's Arm Broken in Washing Wringer

Cass Eldon Howard two years old, son of Mr and Mrs J F Howard of Parker street, climbed into a chair by the washing machine and turned on the wringer. His right arm was caught and fractured between the elbow and shoulder. He was rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital for treatment.

Car high jacked and tires swiped on West Eighth

Robert Bennett of 4120 West Eighth found thieves had jacked up his car during the night and stolen two white sidewall tires and wheels. The vehicle was left propped on bricks.

In Paris on September 12 members of the French National Assembly said after meeting Winston Churchill that the wartime British prime minister spoke excellent English. One deputy reported Churchill spoke such rapid off the cuff French that few words were understandable, with only occasional phrases like an out noted.

Bank robbery suspects chased to Electra after 100 mile dash

Fort Worth teens William E. Holland and Homer Strickland, each with police records, were captured after a 100 mile per hour chase over 16 miles near Electra. They face questioning in a $12,000 bank robbery at Boyd Wise County and a Bellview burglary. Police found three or four dollars in silver and two pinch bars in their Buick stolen from Fort Worth.

Police screen airliner in Winslow for missing New York gambler

Police screened all passengers on a westbound airliner that landed in Winslow Arizona this morning but could not identify New York gambler Harry Gross among them. Gross is a key witness in the New York trial of 18 Brooklyn policemen accused of taking bribes from him.

Planes Checked At Tucumcari

The search for rookie graft witness Harry Gross briefly focused on Tucumcari New Mexico after a non scheduled DC 3 flight from Kansas City landed there. Sheriff Claude Moncus said two such planes landed at 6:27 and 6:50 and were bound for Prescott Needles and Los Angeles with no passengers alighting. If the tip had come in time a photo could have confirmed Gross’s identity but authorities had no power to hold him.

Channel Swimmer Fails in Round Trip Attempt

Dover England Sept 12 Tom Blower 37 failed a round trip swim across the English Channel after reaching Calais in 18 hours 42 minutes and turning back. He quit after 3 miles on the return journey totaling 20 hours 14 minutes in the water and declared he would never attempt a round trip again.

Des Moines Woman Stabbed at Cathedral Near Death

Theresa OConnor, 23, a Des Moines clerk, was stabbed seven or eight times by John Masterson after ending their relation. In the cathedral at St Ambrose two communicants helped subdue Masterson who is jailed on assault with intent to murder charges. OConnor remained in surgery as authorities reported the injuries very serious.
