Burned-room resident to be buried in Llano Cemetery
At 7 55 o clock Monday morning burns from an explosion in a room at 307 North Pierce led to funeral services at 1 o clock in Blackburn Shaw Memorial Chapel conducted by Rev. Charles J Eastes. Burial follows in Llano Cemetery. Surviving are husband Pfc George Kuropata in Germany, parents Mr and Mrs J F White of Pampa, brothers J T White Amarillo Homer Eugene White Pampa and Arlie White Jiavis N M, and three sisters Mrs Beatrice Mason Amarillo Mrs Arvitta Keeton Mrs Evelyn Mes lain and Mrs Eve Maye Jones all of California.

The Cruiser Houston Sunk After Straits Battle in World War II
Survivors recall the sinking of the cruiser Houston after a one and a half hour clash with a Japanese force in Sandra Strait on February 28, 1942. Many sailors endured hours to days in water before reaching Java shore. Captured, they endured six weeks in a Surong jail and later forced labor across Burma, Siam, and Singapore, with 69 of 368 survivors dying from malnutrition during a year in the railroad project. The Navy lists liberated survivors at 94 and identified dead at 108 among the Houston’s 368 crew.
