Office Boy of Field Refuses To Tell Secret
Burt S. Davis, longtime Marshall Field employee, marked fifty years of service at the Chicago firm. He started in 1880 as a cashboy, later served as personal office boy to Marshall Field, and for 36 years has been a traveling salesman for the wholesale branch. Davis protected Field’s confidences, recalling the stern, dignified founder and a era of longhand letters and lone telephones. He described Field as serious minded, thorough, and a man of old school manners.
