Americans beg to leave war zone amid London threat
Five thousand Americans including survivors of the liner Athenia urge the American Embassy to evacuate them from the war zone. Ambassador Kennedy has pressed Washington, but no immediate ships can take all. Most ships are fully booked through mid October, with many avoiding belligerent vessels after the Athenia torpedoing. The embassy operates 24 hours a day to place Americans on any available ships. The freighter Eglantine crew even gave up bunks for 27 women tourists.
