Amarillo schools opened with higher pre registration than the prior year and about 10 000 students expected. Twenty two schools operated though Bivins building closed briefly. one fourth of the operations budget trimmed with salary cuts and 25 teachers let go. Superintendent W A McIntosh urged continued cooperation to maintain strong schools.
In Lebanon Tennessee on September 6 a mob of about 500 stormed the jail, seizing two African American women arrested with five men for the shooting of Constable Ben Northern and Special Constable M. E. Brown. Sheriff Ed Climer arrived as the crowd seized the women, but police and bystanders persuaded the mob to return them to jail. 100 National Guardsmen were called back to post.
The Republican National Committee reported to the House clerk that for the three months ending August 31 it received 76025.57 dollars in campaign contributions and spent 97631.09 dollars on salaries and running expenses.
