Waste by product could boost synthetic rubber supply
AP science report from Chicago notes Prof. K A Kobe of the University of Texas says para cymene from spruce wood pulping can be converted to paraalpha dimethyl styrene to supplement styrene and boost elastic properties of rubber, amid shortages of styrene and butadiene. Also reported is enriched bread containing synthetic lysine from DuPont scientists, aiding growth in rats and potentially helping humans needing more lysine.
