Red Korean gun women attacked a sleeping U S detachment near Masan South Korea killing five captured soldiers and wounding a corporal from New York City. Two U S survivors described the attack as savage and planned with guerrillas wearing South Korean uniforms.
Amarillo marks Labor Day with a park picnic after a labor parade. Mayor Gene Klein to welcome attendees. Speakers include Alice Smith of the Grand Lodge Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen and Stuart Long of the Texas Federation of Labor. City offices close, essential services remain.
Miami Florida September 4 burglars struck the Miami Typesetting Co yanking away 600 pounds of lead ingots valued at 300 dollars. Owner Frank H Streifert notified police.
Los Angeles writer Denny Morrison and columnist Florabel Muir say Morrison will sue the Texas Rangers in federal court over alleged false arrest during a Texas trip with Gambler Mickey Cohen. They say Morrison acted on legitimate business and aim to challenge perceived civil liberties violations.
In Tokyo dated Sept 4 AP reports two tank-led Red Korean columns broke Allied lines on the northeast front, forging down main highways toward Taegu. Advances south of Kigye and near Kyongju mark the deepest Red penetration since August, with heavy fighting across the 120 mile front as Marines and Doughboys gain ground west of Yongsan and Nak tong bulge.
Mrs. Jewel Mitchell of 2600 North Fast Eighth received a War Department telegram stating her son Pfe. Everett Lee Mitchell has been missing in action since August 17. He enlisted in 1943, served in the South Pacific Japan and Germany, returned in 1949, and volunteered for Korea last July at Fort Hood Texas. He is 24, with brothers Dale and Jack, and is nephew of Mrs. J L Love.
A forest fire near Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County is reported under control. It was checked as flames reached doorsteps in the 1,600 resident community. The blaze burned over 3,000 acres.
Panic on US Highway 60 near Panhandle as a head on collision claims five lives. Survivors include Mrs. Thomas Preston Ford 28 of Wichita Falls and her son Gary 7, Angus Doyle and Ronald Bruce Doyle 3, all injured at Highland General Hospital Pampa. Sgt Marcel lus E Shaw 25 Enid Okla driver of the Ford vehicle also dies. Families journey to Palo Duro Canyon disrupted by tragedy.
Three hurricanes affected the Atlantic coastline with winds up to 150 mph. One storm skirted Florida’s west coast toward Apalachee Bay near Tallahassee, while another moved offshore after bypassing Bermuda. A third severe hurricane lay about 1000 miles east southeast of Miami heading northwest with 150 mph winds. Key West felt a sharp but limited hit as ships rode out the storm.
About 1,000 people fled the Brunson Theater in Baytown Texas when a tear bomb caused a panic. Police believed naptha and ammonia created the odor while the theater manager called it a tear bomb. The building was amid picketing by moviemakers union members demanding an increase.
Lt. Billy J. Rountree of Victoria Texas recounts being captured with his Negro platoon by North Korean forces at Masan. He says the Reds treated white officers as equals but degraded Black prisoners, forcing them to remain silent and accompany attacks. He describes mingled fear and boldness among captors and notes American rescue after escape.
Detroit Sept 4 U P Ford Motor Company and the CIO United Auto Workers signed a new five year cost of living contract that boosts hourly pay and pensions for 110000 workers. The package includes an 8 cent immediate COLA with 5 cents more for skilled workers plus a 4 cent yearly rise for four years and pensions raised from 100 to 125 dollars. Company officials warn higher wages may raise car prices unless productivity grows.
An explosion at a holiday cleaning bee in a newly rented Queens apartment hurled flaming solvent on about a dozen people. Three victims died in hospital Cleo Shelton 25 Fred Tillman 12 and Beverly Shelton 2. Eight others were critically injured.
Today is Labor Day and the Am arillo Globe went to press earlier than usual to allow some staff to observe the holiday. The mail and delivery schedules were adjusted as part the effort to grant employees a holiday.
Weather Bureau bulletin notes considerable clouds and occasional snow or showers across Amarillo and West Texas, with little temperature change. Northern and eastern New Mexico see showers and thunderstorms, warmer conditions possible by Tuesday, and gusty easterly winds.
National Safety Council warned the three day holiday weekend would see about 36 million cars on roads. By Sunday night 259 people had died in traffic crashes, with 39 in other mishaps and 24 drownings. States listed totals show high counts in California Ohio New York and Texas among others.
