Gulf Coast seismographic tests by oil firms stirred protest as thousands of dead fish washed ashore on West Beach. A Texas conservation committee blamed underwater explosions for the kills, while officials pledged to halt further blasts and bury the carcasses.

In Houston a weekend altercation over a 5 cent postage stamp led to a shooting. A two seaman crew from the tug H. P. Debardeleben went to a cafe, refused to pay a service charge, then returned for stamps. Patrolman Marion Starns fired from two feet when Skinner moved, wounding him in the groin.
The Justice Department filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission a petition seeking an investigation and reparations order against 717 railroads for alleged wartime overcharges on shipments of explosives and ammunition. Officials estimate the claim at 30 to 40 million dollars, part of a series of similar complaints.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall faced the question of a possible special congressional session this fall to pass emergency Western Europe aid. Undersecretary Robert Lovett warned Europe’s deteriorating economy requires stopgap aid before the Marshall Plan takes effect, but did not specify a fall session.

New York stocks fall sharply before rebound. Chicago grain markets hit new highs as September wheat corn and oats rise. Forecast shows a large drop in the 1947 corn crop since August 1.
The Labor Department reported that average wholesale prices rose 0.2 percent last week marking the ninth record in as many weeks. The advance highlights continued inflationary pressure in the wholesale sector with prices climbing for diverse goods.
The Globe-News plans an October 4 exhibition by Byron Nelson in Amarillo to benefit the San Jacinto Youth Center. Preliminary figures from Amarillo public schools show crowded conditions ahead as elementary and junior high enrollments rise. Amarillo High School registrar R B Norman reports 1,860 registrations this period, up about 8 percent from last year’s 1,852, with final tallies due later today.
Navy officials confirmed that travel through Canada or Mexico counts as overseas service for muster out pay. About 1000 sailors received an extra 100 dollars, with larger amounts for those with actual overseas service, while a Havana week end earned a 35 man Fort Pierce squad additional pay. The Havana trip was funded by the University of Havana during December 1945 showing pay adjustments for travel as service.
