Manke grows large Irish potatoes in dry Panhandle
George Menke of two miles east of Bushland describes a dry year potato crop using barriers similar to Washington methods. He harvested a 3 1 4 pound potato and a two pound specimen, stores twenty five bushels for winter, and believes Panhandle land properly prepared can yield 100 bushels per acre without irrigation. He plants in fall, layers wheat straw over the ground, and relies on cool soil. He notes Early Ohio Irish cobbler and Triumph as successful varieties.
