Ida Grove Sophomore Sells 1250-Pound Calf at Record Bid

A 1250 pound Hereford calf named T. O. Pride sold for 35.50 a pound at the American Royal Livestock Show bidding. Eddie Williams of Williams Meat Co. KC bought the calf for slaughter and distribution. The price set a new American show stock record, surpassing the 1944 and 1933 marks. Don Harkness sold a reserve Angus for 10 per pound. The meat company plans a Missouri barbecue for MU football after the KU game.

Downtown Alley Shooting Claims Amarillo Fireman

C M Westherby a 33 year old Amarillo Fire Department driver mechanic was fatally shot in the alley east of Central Station just after leaving duty. Lawrence Boyd surrendered after reportedly saying I just shot a man, Boyd walked from the scene to police HQ and was taken into custody. Westherby died at Northwest Texas Hospital from two gunshot wounds including an artery severed in the leg. Westherby served as a city fireman from 1942 to 1945 and returned to Central Station after Army service. his wife Inez Westherby has filed for divorce. Police have not yet established a motive and there were no eyewitnesses.

Ailing Batteries To Lay Up 1000 Cars Here This Winter

Battery dealers in Amarillo warn of a nationwide shortage that will idle about 1000 cars this winter. Lead allocations have been cut, quotas slashed, and dealers urge customers to care for aging batteries as old stock runs dry.

Ranch and Oil Pioneer Dies

Oscar Edward McDowell 78, Amarillo rancher oil man and long-time Moore County holdings owner, died after a 14 month hospital stay. Born October 15, 1868 in Spartansburg South Carolina, he came to Texas in 188? and settled near Sunray. Funeral Saturday at Boxwell Brothers Chapel with Baptist rites and listed pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Furr Food Stores Owner W. Furr In Serious Condition

Co W Furr owner of the Furr Food Stores in Amarillo and other Texas towns was in serious condition today in Northwest Texas Hospital. The attending physician said Mr Furr's condition is serious but not critical. Mr Furr who lives at 3006 Hughes was admitted Tuesday evening.

Local Army reenlistment deadline set for top two grades

James A. Green of 1602 North Hughes has volunteered for 18 months in the Regular Army as an original enlistee. Lt. A. C. Smith says Tuesday is the deadline for reenlistment in the top two grades under War Department pamphlet 12-16. after that date the highest grade offered will be staff sergeant.

Range Riders Ride for Jester in Texas Inauguration

Will Rogers Range Riders plan to attend the Texas governor inauguration for Beauford H Jester. About 75 members will travel to Austin with mounts, staying Jan 21 1947, with hotel reservations and horses to be sent ahead. Judge E H Foster received the invitation on behalf of the riders.

Mexico Pays Tops for New U S Cars

Mexicans pay high prices for new American cars at Texas ports of entry. About 12 000 new cars legally enter Mexico and a similar number are smuggled. Laredo handles most traffic with roughly 10 200 legal imports. El Paso reports about 2 000 smuggled since March 12 and 10 000 since year start. High unofficial prices persist with cars selling for about twice U S value and tires also smuggled amid tightened U S inspections.
