Two German submarines attacked by RAF planes in the North Sea and Atlantic are believed destroyed. The Sea Venture and Whitemantle, respectively 1 375 and 1 692 tons, were sunk with fourteen and five survivors. The Whitemantle was out of London and the Sea Venture out of Dover.

Four Infants Die as Radiator Valve Bursts in Nursery
In Perth Amboy New Jersey on October 23 four babies died of suffocation after a radiator valve blew out filling the Perth Amboy General Hospital nursery with steam. Two more infants were revived by three physicians working to save them. Coroner James Flynn Jr. quoted nurse Daisy McGuinness saying she found the room clear at 1 30 a m thirty minutes later it was full of steam and she moved the infants out.
