Walter G Fly 66 Final Rites Held In Amarillo
Final rites for Walter G. Fly a longtime Amarillo druggist were conducted at Blackburn Shawm Memorial Chapel with Dr Stanley Hayne presiding. Fly died at 11 25 Tuesday night at his home 2806 Tyler burial in Liano Mausoleum pallbearers included Mal Stewart N N Whitworth Paul Craig Bill Adams Ivy Wilkinson and Charlie Gibson. He was born October 17 1882 in Water Valley Mississippi moved to Texas at 17 and began in the drug business arriving in Amarillo in 1906 as a traveling representative for E R Roach Drug Co. Fly helped shape Amarillo civic life joining the first volunteer fire department Kiwanis International and the Elks Lodge and later worked with Polk Street Methodist Church. He formed Fly Barton Drug in 1918 and later retired in the late 1920s engaging in oil and ranching then serving as judge of the city corporation court 1935 39. Surviving are his widow Elizabeth Fly two sons Gerald Amarillo and Richard Houston two daughters Elizabeth Sheppard and Gordon Taylor both of Amarillo and his mother Mrs Laura Fly of Amarillo.
