C. Bailey Hankins a former minister and Wayland College graduate was indicted by the Potter County grand jury on forgery charges. He allegedly forged J. F. Nunns name on a $200 check and cashed it, also accused in a $26 ring purchase scheme. Hankins remains jailed in Potter County after a extended search and fake disappearance.
The Pensacola cruiser was ordered to Brazilian waters as a precaution to evacuate Americans who wish to leave. It will stop at Para Pernambuco and Bahia after leaving Trinidad, with directions to be issued later. No requests for evacuation had been received, but officials expect the presence of the ship to reassure Americans in the region.
Three false alarms in rapid succession during the early morning hours kept Amarillo firefighters scrambling. They answered calls at Sixteenth Avenue and Jackson Street, then Tenth Avenue and Jackson Street, and finally Fourteenth Avenue and Buchanan Street before returning to quarters. The U S Weather Bureau announces frost is probable across the panhandle if skies clear. Temperatures near 30 degrees Thursday night prevented frost where cloud cover persisted, and any frost should be mild if it occurs.
Frost blankets the Cascades and Rockies then spreads across the great plains and Mississippi Valley. A cool breeze moves into the Texas prairies with damage to late crops and potential danger cited as frost warnings extend.
Arrested here by Arcarillo police for Memphis authorities in their investigation into the murder one week ago of Herbert Benton 20, whose battered body was found along highway 10 miles southeast of Memphis. Herbert Dawson 17 could not be identified as Benton's companion. Benton was the son of O L Benton, farmer, who lives near Alaska Hall county. He had been hitchhiking home and was seen with a young man along the highway southeast of Memphis. Early last Friday morning Benton was found by a traveling man who took him to Memphis. He had two head wounds and never regained consciousness. A hammer or blunt instrument struck at the base of the skull. J V Snow deputy constable who first investigated believed a hit and run.
Alvin Mauldin aged 2 died after his body was recovered from a well at his parents home in Levelland. Rescue efforts failed to free him and the body became wedged again during attempts to dislodge it. He was the son of Mr and Mrs BR Mauldin farmers.
A. C. Fenwick, assistant state auditor of Texas, died in Canyon from apoplexy after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements await the arrival of Mrs. Fenwick. Fenwick had headquarters in Houston and was auditing the State Teachers College books at the time of his death.
A misunderstanding over departure time cleared as Junior College and Santa Fe officials say the Special train for Lubbock will pull out of the Santa Fe station at eight o clock tomorrow morning. More than 300 fans the Badger team and the Janitor College band will ride. The Texas Tech freshmen game at Tech field starts at 2 tomorrow afternoon. A list of ticket buyers includes Amarillo Bank and Trust Nunn Electric Pearson Sandwich Shop Green Brothers and others totaling over two dozen contributors.
Amarillo theatergoers rush to see Smilin Through at the Municipal Auditorium tonight with tickets at 25 and 60 cents. Proceeds benefit the Little Theater and the Tri State Fair Association as half of box receipts fund a theater of its own and half go to the fair association. More than 600 tickets were sold Thursday signaling strong interest in the three act romantic comedy.
The American Federation of Labor reiterated support for modifying the Volstead act to permit 2.75 percent beer and rejected repeal of the eighteenth amendment. Delegates accepted the executive council report endorsing modification while opposing repeal resolutions. The federation maintained amendments could promote temperance and reduce illegal liquor effects.
