Dazed parents James and Frances Lyons plead for the safe return of infant Lawrence James Lyons missing from St Anthony's Hospital after delivery by Caesarean section. Police search sewers and garbage cans while lie detector tests are arranged for staff and witnesses.
Three Amarillo youths, two juveniles, are held in Collingsworth County jail in connection with a Quail grocery store burglary. A pistol, $25, cigarett es, candy, and bubble gum were recovered. A pickup and two bicycles were found abandoned. truck stolen from Frank Hodges. Oldest boy, 17, could be tried as an adult. juveniles to Amarillo authorities.
The Navy reported about 500 passengers and most of the crew of the typhoon wrecked troopship Kongo Maru were evacuated to the American transport George D. Clymer and were en route to Japan. The grounded Kongo remained on a reef near Sasebo, badly damaged, with a 42-man skeleton crew aboard after relay salvage was halted by heavy seas.

Thomas Thompson reports that the Association of Western Engineers warned that state control of water planning must be preserved to foster local initiative. The discussion occurred during the 24th annual convention at the Herring Hotel with National Reclamation Association directors present. Page 16 references.
A two car head on crash near Amarillo killed one and injured ten. One victim remains unidentified at noon, while Mrs Lilye Schultz of Panhandle identified by hospital staff as a survivor. Schultz daughter reported worry when mother did not return home. Remaining victim in critical condition, both with head injuries. Other injured include Tade McLain and Mrs Jack Hamilton, both in critical condition with extensive injuries. Police say McLain drove one vehicle. Hamilton was in the other. All seven others listed with various injuries. The collision occurred just west of Amarillo on Highway 66 at a small hill. See CRASH-Page 16.

OAK BLUFFS Calif Oct 15 Richard Carr, a high school student, speared a six foot shark from a jetty and then rode the shark’s back for several minutes before it headed toward the sea and he returned to shore.
Vandals damaged eight windows over the weekend at Robert E. Lee School located at 1500 North Taylor. The incident prompted school security checks and local authorities began investigations.
President Truman fired William M. Boyle Jr from chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee. Boyle, once allied with Boss Pendergast’s machine, rose from Kansas City police work to law practice and political roles, then resigned Oct 9 amid ongoing speculation over his future and GOP ties surrounding Gabrielson and the RFC.
Jesse H. Jones portrays Franklin D. Roosevelt as a ruthless politician eager for war to secure a third term. He recalls serving 12 years as RFC head and later wartime commerce secretary, condemns Harry S. Wallace as incompetent, and claims no toadying occurred at RFC. Jones, now 77, revisits his wartime boss and criticizes pressuring loan decisions while defending RFC independence.
