Britain accuses Russia of massive slave labor system at UN

British Undersecretary Christopher Mayhew told the UN social committee that millions of Soviet workers are kept as slave laborers in a “monstrous slave system.” He charged hunger and exhaustion fuel collectivization and said the USSR denies basic human rights. Grayson County Sheriff-Elect Faces Theft Indictment

Merkel Dicken, sheriff-elect of Grayson County, was indicted by a Collin County grand jury on theft and swindling in grain theft cases. District Attorney Paul Worden said Dicken posted bond, and one more person is indicted, totaling 19 defendants. seventeen Grayson County men were indicted in August.

Sheriff-elect Dicken Indicted In Grayson County Grain Fraud Case

No indictments yet in Floyd Hale and Swisher counties against Merkel Dicken who was indicted in Collin County for theft and swindling in grain theft schemes. The 17 Grayson County men allegedly manipulated scales to defraud the buying company with losses estimated around a million dollars, with broader inquiries across West Texas.

Clouds Over Amarillo Forecast With Mild Weekend

The Amarillo area forecast calls for scattered clouds and cooler temperatures with no rain. H. C. Winburn of the Weather Bureau at English Field notes continued warm weather into Friday afternoon. Friday highs around 85 with a low near 53, and Saturday’s high forecast at 79 after a 80 degree Thursday.

Nazi War Criminals Hanged in Landsberg Prison Courtyard

Ten German war criminals were executed in Landsberg Prison today. Seven were hanged for the murder of American airmen shot down over Germany, and three for atrocities at the Flossenburg concentration camp. The executions took place in the prison courtyard where Hitler drafted Mein Kampf.

Explosion at Shamrock plant leaves man dead and another hurt

In Dumas, a Friday afternoon blast at the McKee Plant of Shamrock Oil and Gas Corp. killed Claude P. Rains, a company employee, and seriously injured another. The incident occurred about 1 45 PM, ten miles northeast of Dumas.

Russia the Question Mark in International Situation Discussed

Eugene Worley told about 200 farmers at the District No. 1 Farm Bureau meeting at the Herring Hotel that Russia shapes a domestic course for the distant future. He urged stronger farmer organization as farm prices fall while costs rise, and noted government loans supported commodity floor prices. Meanest Woman Robs Old Couple

Sheriff Cantrell reported a woman posed as a public nurse and robbed an 88 year old man and his 87 year old wife in Shamrock. The thief took $163 from the Murchson pair, whose pension was their only income. The suspect used a fine car to reach the home.

U.S. Aerial Shield Plans for Alaska and Panama Zone

The Air Force outlines a winter air defense in Alaska of five bombers and about 75 fighters, with 12 F-61s in the Panama Canal Zone. Weather Outlook For Amarillo And West Texas

The forecast calls for scattered high cloudiness and continued warmth this afternoon and tonight across Amarillo and vicinity. Saturday will be fair and not as warm. West Texas may see partial clouds with a few showers west of the Pecos Valley tonight. Cooler readings are expected in the Panhandle and South Plains with widely scattered showers and possible thunderstorms in the northwest portions. Northeast to northwest winds may occur with the slight chance of a few peaking temperatures around the deg ree mark.

Two Hurt As Cars Sideswipe In Oklahoma City Highway Crash

Early Friday morning on a highway about 15 miles east of Amarillo a California car with four passengers overturned several times after sideswiping a second vehicle. Injured are Mrs. Sidney Williams of Wichita Falls and Mrs. W. F. Campbell of Redwood City Cal. They, along with two other occupants, were taken to St. Anthony's Hospital. Attendants said injuries are not serious. The California car collided with a 1942 ton and a half flat bed truck driven by J. W. Armstrong of Conwar Box 28. Armstrong was driving east as the crash occurred around 6 am. The injured were transported by N. B. Griggs and Sons ambulance.
