Lyndon Johnson denounces Coke Stevenson as a turncoat after Stevenson backed Jack Porter for the U S Senate nomination. Stevenson lost to Johnson by 87 votes and challenged Johnson on the November ballot. Porter campaigns with Stassen in Amarillo as Porter gains GOP support.
The Oct. 13 sale in Jeroxe City New Jersey featured a six room house at 9 Bostwick Avenue with a minimum bid of 2500 dollars. An auctioneer and partner conducted the sale with preauction tips reaching a participant named Masciale.
Detroit testifies that the Society of Good Neighbors employed private detective Jack Sorenson to spy on neighbors. The case highlights issues of privacy and rights in a community dispute heard October 13.
Officers named at the morning session include Mrs. James L. White of Brownwood as vice president and Mrs. J. H. Moore of Deport as secretary. Guests listed include Miss Lena Boyd and Miss Ethel Baker missionaries, plus Rev. Kenneth Reeves. State attorneys planned to finish their case this afternoon in the trial of Charles Haggerton Jr. one of two brothers charged with stealing a automobile that crashed driverless into the J. C. Oliver residence at 1900 Crockett. Earl Chism now jailed for driving without owner's consent testified that Haggerton directed him to take the Plymouth and tied the confession to a grand jury statement.
Burglars entered The Diamond Shop before daylight on Polk Street by cutting through the roof and entering from adjoining buildings. They took more than 400 diamond set rings and 40 popular watches, leaving White & Kirk and A T Alexander’s tailor shop ransacked but with little loss. Police believe trays and a box were used to stash the loot, with entry achieved via a roof section and interior access to show cases.
Berlin officials in the Russian sector announce the Reich Chancellery ruins will be torn down and blasted. The Russians have removed Italian and Bavarian marbles and fine woodwork. What remains will be dismantled for salvage or destroyed.
Amarillo and nearby areas may see rain soon as a low pressure area forms on the West Coast and moves southward. US Weather Bureau observer Walter Watts says rainfall could arrive by early next week if the system passes south. otherwise cooler weather with little precipitation is expected. The last notable rain was 1.02 inches on Sept. 20, and no broad rain has fallen since Sept. 1. Forecast calls for fair skies and mild temperatures midweek.
The Texas Motor Court Association two day convention at the San Jacinto Youth Center winds up late Wednesday afternoon. Tom H. Taylor of the Texas Highway Department and Sam Twilleger, the association vice president, spoke in the morning. Twilleger emphasized courtesy, cleanliness and fair prices in tourist court operation. Reports from committees and director elections followed by officer elections are on the Wednesday afternoon program. Ed Graf of Laredo presided at the morning session.
Fair mild conditions continue this afternoon tonight and Thursday for Amarillo area. West Texas sees fair weather with partial cloud cover Thursday and little temperature change. Advance gift workers on the Community Chest drive must report to 1118 Polk or to President E. M. Blackburn Jr. by 10 o'clock Thursday morning. The president aims to present a preliminary collections report and board members with reports already filed should submit lists by tomorrow morning. The drive progresses on an economical staff so totals are not yet available.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey faced a hostile welcome in Southern Illinois with flying tomatoes and rotten eggs as he toured Oklahoma bound speeches. In Mt. Vernon and Beaucoup crowds pelted the candidate's train, a security patrol reported, while observers noted Febress to Wallace supporters nearby. Dewey pressed his campaign on the Republican message.
Evansville Indiana October 13 railroad engineer Lee Tindle in charge of the Dewey train says Governor Dewey should not have called him a lunatic. He notes the incident at Beaucoup Illinois involved a crowd around the rear of the train and that backing up was slow with proper signals. He calls the controversy hot air and says it gave Dewey publicity.
Paris dispatch reports Russia refuses any early Berlin settlement while demanding UN Security Council withdrawal as a first step. Bramuglia and Vishinsky discuss but divergent positions persist. The UN Political Committee advances disarmament work and Palestine talks proceed as Britain accuses Moscow-backed fifth columns. Security Council to meet on Palestine truce violations with Warren Austin delegating to Bramuglia for Berlin talks.
October 13 Kansas City received Dorothy Ray Bivens and her mother Mrs. Ray Bivens of Tulsa as the Texas entry in the American Royal queen contest arrived. Chamber of commerce officials news photographs from the Kansas City Star and livestock industry representatives greeted them at 6 30 a m as they stepped off the train.
