Destruction Looms as Stimson Warns German Surrender or Die

Secretary Stimson warned Germany that cities would be destroyed unless they surrendered to advancing Allied forces. Allied artillery and air attacks battered Aachen as the garrison refused to surrender, with German tanks massing outside the city and heavy fighting continuing through the night. About 275 of Aachen’s 1500 to 2000 garrison surrendered, but the defenders remained determined to fight to the end.
